Ever felt disappointed after taking what seemed like a “phenomenal” portrait or group picture only to find a so-so snapshot after it was downloaded to your computer? Every single photographer has experienced this let down.

But the discouragement is about to end. How? Because the difference between a snapshot and a masterpiece often comes down to what is done before the event and how well the pictures are executed during. Here are eight simple tips that have produced significant results.

PLANNING THE PHOTOGRAPHY POSE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE

I. Do Your Homework

Decide beforehand, WHICH photography poses you would like to capture. Important factors to consider are: who will be there, what is the environment, and the lighting requirements (day or night).

II. Take Numerous Photographs

Take multiple shots of each pose. Regardless of what you say or do, people will close their eyes. And, don’t count on spotting photo problems on the camera’s tiny LCD screen (even on full magnification); which leads to…

III. Check Your LCD Screen

Your camera’s LCD screen should only be used to review general framing of the picture, visibility of faces, and the histogram. You can use a wonderful photography pose; arrange everyone perfectly; and, have the photograph “frozen” (nobody is blinking and the camera is steady)… but, when you check the LCD, you see two idiots fighting in the background!

IV. Funny Phrases

Have some funny phrases handy to use JUST BEFORE YOU TAKE THE PHOTO. Don’t use them when setting up for the shot. And, don’t use the same phrase ALL THE TIME. Throw in anecdotes, phrases, names, and words that are humorously appropriate to your group. A natural grin looks three times better than “fake-photo-face.”

V. Wide Angle

You will tend to use wide angle more often than telephoto. Pay particular attention to your “end people” (those farthest to the right and the left when viewed through the viewfinder). Here is one critical tip to insure that IF cropping is eventually required for your picture, the end people won’t have to lose a limb.

VI. Blinded By The Light

Every flash has a “flash range,” which defines the range of proper illumination your flash produces. Check your owner’s manual for specifications and do not attempt any photograph where subjects are beyond the flash range.

VII. Plan “B”

If you need to be further away than your flash allows, there are four things you can do (not counting “crying”): Increase the ISO; use a tripod with longer exposure times; move to a brighter location; and purchase an external flash unit.

VIII. Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall

Avoid shooting directly into mirrors or reflective surfaces with a flash. If an alternate location is impractical, take the picture in such a way that the flash is NOT PERPENDICULAR to the surface, but at an angle, so the flash will not be seen in the picture.

What to consider when buying a digital camera?. One thing for sure is that I would not introduce to anyone to buy cheap digital cameras , even though they might not have enough resources for a good one. As we all knows, there are some that are more inexpensive than others, there are some that are really cheap. They are not something that we should buy, but when someone need one and does not have enough money, this might be something they will choose from. This was a mistake that my relative made, and only then she learned the unnecessary lesson.

She wanted a digital camera, but she did not have enough cash to get a good one. In fact, she was quite tight. When asked what kind of advantage digital camera does she aim at to buy, she responded as long as it is a cheap digital cameras. Soon enough, she came home with one that cost thirty dollars. I think she said it was a Barbie camera, but I can’t call back now. She didn’t anticipate it to accomplish advance stuff, but she thought it might work for what she needed. She was wrong. This camera was made out of fragile plastic and was for kids, but she bought it thinking she would be able to take care of it and nothing would break.

Luckily, nothing broke, but the camera turned out to be not operating for the most part. I guess even a child would not be happy to use this cheap digital cameras. She shoot some pictures with it. It only held about twenty, and memory cannot be increased to it. She was fine with that, and thought she could use this for a better one. She went around her house and shoot some pictures. Then turned it off and set it down.
The very next day she turned it on for further photo taking. Again, the pictures she had taken were disappeared. She wasn’t clear why, and she went about taking more. She switch it off again and turned it back one. Again, the pictures were disappeared.

Somehow, I think this is the cheapest of the cheap digital cameras. It won’t save the pictures at all. If you turn it off you have lost your photos. She ended up taking it back for a refund, and saved up for a real one. Well, she has learned her lesson about cheap digital cameras, but for those who wants to take up photography, we should always look for latest tips for taking digital photography before investing in photography accessories.

One of the most common oversights in group photography is not optimally framing the photo that they want to make an enlargement so their MASTERPIECE can find a place of honor on the wall.

Here’s the paradox…

Have you ever enlarged one of your WOW group images only to realize that you need to cut off a part of one subject, in order to achieve the desired size of the enlargement?

If you’ve ever used a 5 x 7 crop on an image having a 2:3 or 3:4 aspect ratio (which most digital cameras use), you know what I mean.

Photographers often experience this discouraging result without knowing what caused it; thus leaving them doomed to repeat it. Consider this ideal scenario…

It’s a beautiful day, the sun is shining, and your composition is good (i.e., you “framed” the image so that your camera’s viewfinder forms a close crop around all of your subjects).

Everyone is smiling, and the background has been nicely blurred. After downloading the photograph, you realize you just took a masterpiece.

So what do you do (after jumping up and down)? Let’s say the family wants to hang a nice 14 x 11 portrait on their wall. (Refer to these Group Portraits examples since photos are not allowed to be included here.)

If you take a group picture and then superimpose a 14 x 11 (or, whatever the desired enlargement size is) rectangular on it, you can tell how the final 14 x 11 cropped image would look.

Here is the Money-Saver

If at all possible, always use STANDARD print sizes when enlarging, mating, and/or framing an image. Why? Because framing an 11 x 14 photo will cost 25% to 80% less than a non-standard size (11 x 12, for example) will cost.

What To Do BEFORE THE PHOTOGRAPH Is Taken

Compose each shot as though it will turn out to be a masterpiece! So what does that mean? Remember that the final image will probably need to be cropped. Therefore, BEFORE you snap the picture, allow enough non-critical space around your subjects, so if you do need to crop it off, your subjects will remain intact.

How much space is needed? Adding approximately 20% to both the horizontal and vertical sides of your composition should do it. Then, once you decide how big an enlargement you want for your masterpiece, there will be enough excess to achieve your goal without doing a hatchet-job on any of your subjects or spending a fortune on custom framing.
