Scarface Memorabilia

Scarface was the 1983 remake of the original Howard Hawks film in 1932. The cult classic followed the life of the notorious gangster drug cartel “king”, Tony Montana, a.k.a. Scarface. The film begins in Cuba, following the life of an obscure Cuban man. After emigrating to the United States, Tony and his buddy start selling drugs in Miami, Florida. In a short time, he’s a millionaire. Soon Scarface learns that his rise to power may be too much for him to handle.

The film has become popular with many big names in hip-hop and rap, reminiscent of the “nobody to somebody” style of hip hop. Scarface memorabilia is a favorite with some of celebrities. First generation movie posters, cast and director signed posters and signed photographs are all big hits among rappers. Action figures, in their original boxes, may be displayed as “collectibles” in the home.

The display plays a major role in showing off Scarface memorabilia. Double-matted shadow boxes with interior lighting are one of the best (and most popular ways) of displaying treasured Scarface memorabilia. The shadow box display case has two mats, one smaller than the one beneath. The picture, action figure, or poster is then placed in a deep set box.

Some people do not want a light inside, hence the name shadow box. Others like to draw attention to the piece by shedding a little light on the subject. Small bulbs are placed inside the rim, producing an extremely warm and rich effect. Others think the lighted box of scarface memorabilia a pompous display, believing the traditional framing the only right way of framing.

Some Scarface memorabilia devotees may even give over a special room or location for their collection. Still others just like to “sprinkle” their pieces all around the home.

Action figures are one of the most valued and memorable aspects of Scarface memorabilia. The personality and feeling of the character is frozen in time in the form of the action figure. For example, an action figure of Scarface holding a rifle, his coat blowing in the wind, is forever captured in a stunningly sculpted action figure. Remember, once you have your action figure, don’t take it out of the package! This would guarantee an immediate and dramatic decrease in value.

Clothing is something every Scarface fan can enjoy. T-shirts with the famous Scarface poster screen printed against a black background is a must for the Scarface memorabilia fan. Coats are, of course, good candidates for Scarface pictures and logos.

If you’re a Scarface fan, you may want to look into the Scarface memorabilia that’s out there. You may see a poster, T-shirt, or action figure just waiting for a new home in your home!

Heart-pounding Crime Stories

The human race has always been fascinated with crime, both true crime and fictional. A crime story is considered to be entertainment and a large chunk of films, books and movies is devoted to criminal subjects. Wilkie Collins is said to be the novelist who invented the modern crime thriller. Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories enthralled Victorian readers and their use of forensic investigation influences crime writers today. Later, Agatha Christie wrote a string of murder novels set amongst the British upper class.

In America, the genre was popularized by Raymond Chandler, whose novels were the basis of several film noir movies, including The Big Sleep starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Films about maverick private investigators have prevailed ever since. TV shows have also been dominated by crime story series. The 1970s was the decade of Starksy and Hutch, Cagney and Lacey and Charlie’s Angels. Michael Douglas’s career was launched in The Streets of San Francisco. Some of these shows tried to look different, as in Ironside, which featured a wheelchair bound detective. There were shows just for escapism and those, which were grittier.

Criminals have been portrayed as the anti-hero or Robin Hood type of figure. The true crime story of Bonnie and Clyde was criticized for glamorizing the bank robbers. Steve McQueen played a gentleman thief in The Thomas Crown Affair and it was difficult not to be rooting for him. Crime capers such as Ocean’s Eleven made the audience identify with the thieves.

The world of the Mafia and organized crime has also been explored in film and in books. The Godfather trilogy, based on the novel by Mario Puzo, was a graphic depiction of the inner world of modern day gangsters. Goodfellas told the true story of how gangsters live and what makes them tick.

Real crime holds a special fascination for people, especially in the case of serial murderers or particularly brutal killings. One of the best selling novels of a true crime story is In Cold Blood, written by Truman Capote. It tells the story of the two men who slaughtered an entire family in their own home. Books and films have also been written about notorious murderers such as Ted Bundy and John Gacy. In fact, Gacy was the inspiration behind the Hannibal Lecter character in Silence of the Lambs. The account of the Manson Family murders called Helter Skelter, written by Vincent Bugliosi, was another bestseller. Perhaps our enthusiasm to learn about such tales is an attempt to understand the motives of cold-blooded killers.

Today, shows like The Sopranos, CSI and Cold Case keep the interest going. There is a lot of emphasis on forensics and police use of scientific methods as we’ve gone into the 21st century. However it’s presented, we all like a good whodunit and a safe peep into the underbelly of society.

Dvd Player Sale

First there were VHS players. Remember these bad boys? I sure do. I can actually still recall when my father brought one home. I must have been in the fifth grade. We were all so stoked about owning one. If you’re old enough, then you probably remember how folks used to actually rent VHS players in the 80s from the video stores. Ha, if you tell your kids that now, they will probably think it’s about the lamest thing they’ve ever heard. It’s amazing how much has changed in the last 20 years. Of course these days we are dealing with DVD players. More and more folks are doing away with the old-school VHS stuff altogether. It’s kind of like cassette tapes or A-tracks. Okay, nothing is quite like A-Tracks, and it probably doesn’t want to be. Anyway, what high-tech DVD player is sitting in your family room? Although these babies used to cost a pretty penny, now days you can find a dvd player sale about anywhere.

Do you recall what DVD players were selling for when they initially hit the home entertainment scene? They were quite pricey. I can’t say that I saw a dvd player sale back then. It’s sort of like when plasma televisions hit the market. It is all a big deal for a while, but then the newness of it all fades out. Something new and improved typically comes along. That’s the way of our world. We always want the newest and greatest stuff. Regardless, sometimes the best doesn’t necessarily mean the most expensive. If you didn’t already know it, these days you can find a quality DVD player for under 100 bucks. Now, I know they go as low as like 30 dollars, but you also have to remember that you get what you pay for. I recommend that you go with a brand you can trust. For example, I recently spotted a dvd player sale online. They had a Sony DVD player for 65 dollars with free shipping. That’s awesome if you ask me! In my experience, there’s no reason to spend hundreds on these entertainment systems. Sure they’re essential in this day and age, but they only last a few years. This is my third one, and I will bet that it won’t last more than three years. Sure, it will still be there, but I’ll bet it won’t read the disks worth a darn. That means a lot of skipping and stalling.

If you are currently in search of a dvd player sale, then it’s time to get jacked into the web. Check out websites like BestBuy.com and CircuitCity.com for a number of recent deals and specials. Find that new DVD player for a price you can afford.

Looking For Speed Racer, I Found Lots Of Interesting Info On The Mach V!

I love Speed Racer, and while looking for places to buy Speed Racer tshirts I found a lot of great info about the Mach V, too!

Okay, so today we’re going to take a look at all of the Mach 5’s wonderful powers. Here’s the original list, with names translated directly from the original 1960’s Japanese manga:

1. Auto Jack- A series of 4 jacks that can be rapidly deployed. Ostensibly, these jacks are so that the car can be repaired quickly but in practical use, Speed usually ends up using them to jump over obstacles in his way.
2. Belt Tires- A special tire grip is activated, allowing Speed to keep control on icy or uneven terrain. When this power is activated, 5,000 extra horsepower are also evenly distributed amongst the 4 tires; the power is drawn from secret auxiliary engines.
3. Cutter- Two huge rotary saw blades pop out of the front of the Mach 5, enabling obstacles such as trees to be cleared out of the way with ease.
4. Defensor- Seals the driver in a waterproof, bulletproof cockpit. The driver inside is basically invulnerable once the Defensor is deployed.
5. Evening Eye (or Illuminating Eye) a special illumination system allowing the Mach 5’s driver to see much further down the road than normal. This system can also interface with the goggles on Speed Racer’s helmet to give infrared vision assistance.
6. Frogger Mode- essentially submarine mode, this allows the Mach 5 to serve as a submarine, complete with periscope, for 30 minutes- that’s when the air runs out.
7. Gizmo Rocket- activates a small homing rocket, controlled by a joystick on the center console. This rocket can be used to carry messages, take aerial video, or for self defense.
8. Button H is located on the center console and activates the Gizmo Rocket’s homing device, sending it to a pre-programmed location automatically.

The Mach 5 featured a steering wheel with 7 buttons on it; each of the buttons corresponds to one of the powers above. The 8th “power”- the “homing” function of the Gizmo Rocket- was activated by pressing a button on the center console. Speed needs these special “additions” to the Mach 5, as the races he competes in are not generally contested under the most sporting of conditions, and his opponents have no problem with blatant cheating either.

In Speed Racer X, a short-lived 2002 Nickelodeon remake, several of the names and special functions of the buttons were altered. The Auto Jacks were replaced with a system using rockets and compressed air- this solidified the change of the jacks’ original design as a pit stop system, to a “jumping” system, allowing Speed to jump over dangerous obstacles. The Belt Tires were also replaced with tires that allowed the Mach 5 to float. The night vision system was also replaced with a grappling hook, and Frogger mode changed to be a whole-body transformation of the car.

In the 2008 live-action movie, there were several other changes made to the Mach 5. Frogger mode was abandoned, and so was the Illuminating Eye feature. Jump Jacks and the bulletproof cockpit were kept intact, and tire shields- controlled from a joystick on the center console- were added. Speed also got a set of instant-inflating spare tires and steel crampons that emerge from the tire treads when things get too slick or icy. It’s interesting to note that the car in the movie IS an actual, physical car- unfortunately; no one drove it, though. It was suspended from a crane and moved with hydraulics to create its effects, and then it was inserted into the digital footage later. If you DO want a Mach 5 of your own to drive, 100 of them were produced in 2002, for charity. They featured 345 horsepower and came at a price of 75 to 125k, depending on options. They even build a non-street-legal version that included functional, concealed cutter blades in the nose!

The Mach 5 has had several different iterations, although the basic design of a white car with a bubble dome cockpit, tail fins and a large M on the side hasn’t really varied much. The Mach 5 actually looks a lot like a racecar produced in the 60’s called the Chaparral 2C- originally designed by Jim Hall. The Mach 5 can’t actually do Mach 5, either- the name is intended to be a pun- as “go” means “5” in Japanese. In the manga and the Japanese version of the TV show, the car is just called the Mach, and Speed races in a car class where the rides are designed for minimum weight and maximum speed.

That’s all for now. If you’re looking for Speed Racer cartoon, stop by the store and pick some up!

Tips For The Best Home Theater Surround Sound

The sound quality experience in most movie theaters is top quality. I don’t just mean the volume (which is often very load), but the actual quality of sound is often worthy of the visit alone. One of the reasons for this is the placement of the speakers around you in the theater. So the comparison to a normal television speaker or the conventional two speaker setup is not really fair. But you can see where I am going with this, I am sure. One of the essential parts of the home theater system experience is the surround sound to have any hope of emulating the cinema experience.

Home theater accessories
Surround sound splits the sound up and outputs the component parts through different speakers. The effect is that you get to hear realistic sound as you hear it in the outside world, rather than from a wall in front of you. If you hear the mad axe murderer creak a floorboard behind you, it would certainly add to the effect. By the same token, if you are watching a tidal wave on screen, you really don’t want to hear that behind you. If the wave is in front, then that’s where the sound should come from. The technology behind these type of effects are wonderful, and they are something that you can experience in a good home theater system.

Home theater accessories
So, when you are looking at home theater systems, try and find one that has surround sound. If you want a realistic experience, then this has got to be a good starting point. And, as technology improves and becomes more common, then the price should start to tumble. Get into the Internet and have a good look around, but try and see some systems in stores, and listen to them. Most good specialist home theater stores will be able to demonstrate their home theater systems for you.

Home theater accessories
A surround sound system should have at least five speakers, but some may have more. The first should go above the screen. The bass speaker should be under the screen. Some systems will have two speakers for the side and two for the back as well, but you should get instructions on how to place the speakers that come with whichever system you buy. The two small speakers that go in the back of the room are an important part of the surround sound effect. This is where the background noises, voices and ‘behind you’ moments. It is this element of the surround sound system that gives it that extra bit of quality.

When you are starting to look at some theater systems, start by looking at the familiar brand names. But don’t restrict yourself to these. Try many systems out and you will soon begin to get a handle on the ones that are right for you. Maybe you have some friends that already have home theater systems? Why not pay them a visit and ask for a demo. People are always happy to show off their home theaters!

Hebrew Bible Updates

Jewish Journal: hebrew bible

William Shatner is God. And Pharaoh. Just in time for Passover, the Jewish Music Group (a division of Shout Factory) has released “Exodus: An Oratorio in Three Parts,” performed by the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. “It’s perfect seder entertainment,” Shatner said recently, but more than that, “it speaks to people of all religions. Exodus: An Oratorio” is divided into three parts: “Moses and Pharaoh,” “The Ten Plagues” and “Redemption.” The music mixes symphonic and sacred, modulating strings, choral voices and baritone solos to provide both uplift and ballast to the biblical material — as well as gentle musical transitions between some of Shatner’s narrative performances. “It was quite a happening,” Shatner recalled in a recent telephone interview.

Shatner was born in Montreal, Canada, to Jewish parents and grew up in a kosher home. Shatner also had roles in such now-classic films as “The Brothers Karamazov” (with Yul Brynner and Claire Bloom) and “Judgment at Nuremberg.”

Although only 79 original episodes ran between 1966 and 1969, the “Star Trek” series cemented Shatner in the popular consciousness.

Nonetheless, after the series was cancelled, and following a divorce, Shatner was forced to live out of his truck, performing summer stock. During this period, concerned that he had been typecast as Kirk, Shatner wandered in the wilderness, taking whatever roles he could.

More recently, Shatner hit gold again, portraying attorney Denny Crane on “Boston Legal,” a role he originated on the series “The Practice.” Shatner’s life has also had its share of tragedy: his third wife, Nerine, drowned after mixing valium and alcohol. Shatner recently told Details magazine that he didn’t “understand closure … we grieve forever.”

In 2004, Ben Folds produced “Has Been,” a collection of songs, many of which he co-wrote with Shatner, including featured guest performances by Joe Jackson and Aimee Mann. Which brings us back to “Exodus” and its composer David Itkin.

Itkin grew up in a conservative Jewish home, began writing music at 14 and conducting at 16. A graduate of the University of The Pacific Conservatory, he has been music director of the Arkansas Symphony since 1993, while also conducting and serving as music director for the Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra. “We kept winnowing and winnowing the list” he said, “and Shatner’s name kept coming up. Itkin contacted Shatner, and it turned out that not only was he interested, he was available on the needed dates.

“It was intriguing,” Shatner recalled.

So with little preparation, other than years of reading the haggadah at seders, Shatner arrived in Little Rock the night before the first performance.

“He was great fun to be around,” Itkin recalled.

Itkin was impressed by how Shatner was able to deliver his narrative within the very proscribed places and vary each character, much like different “takes,” affording choices for editing the eventual produced work.

“On Saturday,” Shatner said, “everything fell into place.” “There’s no magic like a live audience,” Shatner says in the recording’s liner notes. Shatner recalled. In recent years, the immediate post-seder entertainment has been funny Passovers songs (like “There’s No Seder Like Our Seder” to tune of “There’s No Business Like Show Business”). This year may well find our seder going forth with Shatner and the “Exodus Oratorio.”
