Things to Do If You Are In Need of an Electric Guitar Amp

It can be hard to tell if a good guitar really is a good guitar. How much you really invest in it will be the main factor to consider. I think that most of the time, not a lot of people are able to get the most out of their money when buying their guitars and accessories. The best part to invest in would be, for me at least, a good guitar amp - and not just any guitar amp.

An amp defines the sound of your guitar. Which is why investing in a reliable amp is what you should do. But you might want to learn about the various kinds of amps first.

In general, you have four different amps. All of which have different effects on the kind of sound your guitar makes. First we have analogue amplifiers. Transistors stand in for pre amps and power amps. You’ll notice that this has a brittle but strong sound. The distortions are more distinctly known for the same type of tone, but the quality is what varies a lot. These are very sturdy in general, and do not require frequent replacement of parts. What’s even better is that these solid state amps are much cheaper compared to the other types of amps.

Let’s talk about tube amps now. These types of amps were the pioneers for all the other kinds of amps that just improved its design over time. There are quite a few guitarists that depend on this kind of amp a lot, being the first type of amp made. Tube amps, as compared to analogue amps, have a heavier tone. It gives the amplified sound a more natural feel. Another benefit would be the same amount of power to wattage. Amps like these also give you an allowance of different channels for the instances you need clean sounds or distortions. But what’s not so good about these is the fact that its tubes are made of glass, so you need to be careful. These tubes need replacement regularly.

Given today’s technology, we now have digital amps to replace analogue amps. Using some pre-programmed software, modeling or digital amps are now able to copy the sounds that are effects from using other types of amps. It is pretty pricey though. Though generic digital amps are usually affordable compared to those that are branded, it is still pretty expensive. But, investing in this kind of amp will give you the benefit of having different sound qualities available for you to experiment with. Better quality usually goes hand in hand with a higher price. You can’t tell which is the digital sound and which is the one its copying, it’s that good!

Now we get to a combination of sorts, the hybrid amp. The beauty of the hybrid amp is in its technology that combines the handiness of an analogue with the power of a tube amp. The Marshall Valvestate is a great example of this. You’re getting a whole sound for less of the cost.

Now that you’ve read about all the different kinds of amp, you should be able to choose which suits you and your guitar. Don’t buy the first amp that you lay your eyes on, especially when you’ve only started to explore this concept. The wisest thing you can do would be to bring a guitar with you to test all the possible combinations of guitar types, amps and volume. Does it sound off when the volume is low? On the highest volume, does it still sound good? Do you hear other things besides the sound your guitar should be making? You have to choose well because you are going to have this for a long time.
