Essential Good Parent Guide: The 12 Commandments

In any child’s education a critical element is the parents’ expertise for this “job”. No one is born with all the skills, but they can learn and acquire new skills from books or from advice from trained professionals.

Here are the commandments any parent should follow:

1. Never underestimate your child – they can understand more than you think they do and if you let them believe you think poorly of them this could affect their self esteem and development.

2. Avoid using threats – most kids love a challenge and once threatened they might go on and do what they weren’t supposed to do ust to see if they can escape the punishment.

3. Never bribe your child – if you are trying to get them to learn for money for example, they will fail to comprehend the importance of learning, all they will get from this is the importance of money.

4. Never make a small child promise something – small kids can’t hold promises so don’t force them to lie and then punish them because they did that.

5. Do not keep them under too short a leash – to grow up normally kids need some space, some freedom. Safety, of course, is always a priority but some bumps and bruises are all part of childhood. As part of their development a child needs to be able to assess risk.

6. Never use big words or too many words when you are talking to your child – keep your ideas simple and concise so they can understand every thing you have to say.

7. Do not expect an immediate and blind obedience. Every child has to taught to think for themselves; not to merely follow orders. So the easoning behinf any instruction should be explained if the child asks ‘why’.

8. Do not indulge a child too much – they could develop compartmental disorders.

9. Do not compromise when it comes to the rules of any game – for a game to have educational benefits too then its initial rules must be respected.

10. Only impose rules that are compatible with the age of your child.

11. Do not try to inflict guilt. This is not an appropriate feeling for any child, especially if they are very young.

12. Never give your child orders that you don’t take seriously – your child will try to please you and giving them an order is a serious matter. It is just cruel and mocking if that order is a joke.

A parent has to give help a child develop physically and emotionally. It does not just happen!
