Children learn to mirror others from a very young age. It’s how they find out how to behave, look after for themselves, develop new skills, and connect with others. From their earliest moments they watch you closely and shape their own ways and beliefs after yours. Your behavior become enduring representations, which will set their perspectives and behaviors for the remainder of their life.
It’s essential to be responsible, logical and affectionate with your son or daughter. This also applies to the relationship you have with your partner, your parents, and other family members and friends that are also involved in son or daughter’s life. Declare to mishaps when you make them, and converse openly and truthfully with all friends and family.
It’s also essential to look after yourself. When we’re focusing on what’s best for our son or daughter it’s easy to overlook our own needs. Your son or daughter and your family are relying on you physically and emotionally, so it’s crucial that you teach your son or daughter by example that taking good care of yourself aids you tolook after them and everyone else in your family. This shows your son or daughter that not only do you care deeply for them and everyone else in the family, but you care deeply for yourself also. This is a key phase in teaching your child about self worth. This may mean getting a sitter and treating yourself to say a movie and dinner out, or participating in another favorite pastime on your own. This shows your son or daughter that you are not merely their parent, but a your own person with your needs and interests. It also gives them a chance to show you how well they can do when you are not there for a short time.
It’s also important to cultivate your relationship with your partner. Let your son or daughter see you communicate in a positive and healthy way with one another, and show affection and love for one another so your son or daughter can start to appreciate from an early age what a healthy relationship should be like.
You’ll soon see your son or daughter modelling many of their manners after your own. Be sure that what you say and do around your son or daughter will help establish a strong feeling of security and self pride.
