Effective Weight Management For Teens
Nowadays, more and more teenagers are falling into a dangerous zone in health standards; obesity. Even if the teen is not obese, there is a high chance that the teen may be overweight. Unfortunately, it is understandable how many kids develop these habits. We are living in a world where it costs a dollar for a hamburger but $8 for a box of organic strawberries. The choice is simple.
It is economically beneficial to eat fast food then to buy healthy food because it is just too expensive, especially if you are raising a family. This is not the only problem. More and more teens are losing interest in sports and physical activity and are being drawn to the glamour of television, movies and video games. At least the video game industry is looking into this phenomena and is trying to make a difference. There is a new game out called Wii fit which helps your teen and family come up with workouts and health stats and make this into a fun game for all. Even though it is not a traditional workout, it is getting your teen to move instead of sitting in front of the television like a zombie.
Here are some friendly tips to help kids lose weight:
• Communication. Communication is the best way to talk to your teen about his or her physical appearance. If he or she is displeased about his or her physical appearance then as a parent you need to speak up and tell them that this is the decision that he or she has to make; to stay the way he or she is or to do something about it. It is a serious decision to make because losing weight means to change your lifestyle, but there are more benefits then losing a few pounds, your teen will also regain and increase his or her self confidence.
• Diet and Exercise. After making this decision, your child does not need to run marathons but needs to start somewhere. You can start off very slow with just 30 minutes of exercise until your child builds some stamina and looks for an activity that he or she might really enjoy. As a parent, you can control a lot of the food that your teen eats. When you go shopping, stop buying all of the goodies and while cooking try to control what you cook in terms of calories and fat.
• Picking the right routine. Your child does not need to look at working out as exercise but he or she will if he or she does not like what he or she is doing. Your child needs to pick an activity that calls to his or her interest. In this way, your teen will be excited to go to karate or basketball, and not dread getting into the car because he or she wants to sit in front of the television.
• You may want to look at weight programs for your teen. There are many child and parent weight loss programs such as TOPS and Weight Watchers. These are not easy programs so your teen will need your support and encouragement while attending the program. Sometimes, many parents join the program with their child in order to be a reliable support system. Even weight loss camps have tremendous popularity and help kids to socialize with others who have similar problems and interests. They can use each other as a support system and after camp is over, they can maintain a happier lifestyle.
Being obese or overweight is not easy mentally, emotionally of physically, but it is something that can be overpowered. Your child can lose weight and can become a happier and healthier person. So search around for websites recommending healthy free weight loss for teen articles and other motivational self-help information so that our young ones are productive healthy people again.
