Discovering The Key To Swinging A Golf Club Properly

From all the golf tips for beginners that are floating around there are few that are as valuable as those tips that can teach you how to swing a golf club.

Without any question the most crucial part of any golf swing is the downswing which sees your body uncoil to release the power which has been generated by the backswing. Starting with your hips turning, followed by your shoulders, arms and wrists, the whole movement is similar to a whip snapping and the secret lies in controlling your movement, not to allow your hands to release and to turn your both your hands and forearms over immediately prior to making contact with the ball.

Rather like a door that is shutting, the clubface moves rapidly from an open to a closed position as it approaches the ball and it is crucial to turn your hands and forearms to release the club head which will otherwise remain open, frequently producing a sliced shot.

At the point of impact, the club face should be pointing in the direction of the target line as you close it and failure to release the club head will generally lead to poor distance and accuracy.

To be sure that you release the club head correctly you will have to pay close attention to your grip which has to be light but firm throughout the whole swing. Excessive tension from your arms and hands is a sure recipe for a bad shot.

Next, make sure that your swing has a reasonable speed and don’t try to swing too fast. Most beginners try to swing so fast and with such force that they cannot escape leaving the club face open at the moment of impact with the ball.

Finally, for a right-handed golfer, concentrate on ensuring that the back of your left hand is pointing straight at your target at the moment of impact with the ball.

For the impact to be right you need to ensure that your right forearm (for a right-handed golfer) turns over your left forearm during impact. This is not always easy for the beginner and you should practice this by swinging in slow motion. You don’t need to take any fancy golfing lessons but simply practice the whole swing sequence in slow motion and pay special attention to the movements that your forearms are making. At the moment of impact make a conscious effort to turn your right forearm over your left forearm.

While you are still practicing in slow motion, totally freeze your whole body at the point of impact and check the position of the face of your club. It will be either square, open, or closed and your aim is to ensure that it is square to your target line.
